How to Install/Configure your upgraded Brilliant Faceplate

Overview

This article walks you through installing your newly upgraded Brilliant faceplate. It covers every scenario you may encounter, whether you have one Control or many, and whether you feel comfortable configuring on your own or need a little extra guidance.

Read the “Before You Begin” section first, then jump to the path that matches your situation.

Before You Begin

What you’ll need

•         Your new Brilliant faceplate(s)

•         The Brilliant mobile app on your phone or tablet

•         A few minutes to screenshot your current setup (strongly recommended)

NOTE - During the faceplate setup process in the Brilliant Mobile app, it will ask you “how many switches control this light?” Make sure to always select 1 (even if more than one switch controls the light).

Step 1 — Take screenshots of your current configuration

Before you remove or replace anything, capture your existing settings in the app. These screenshots are your safety net if anything needs to be reconfigured.

1.       Open the Brilliant app and tap Settings.

2.       Tap Brilliant Home and Devices.

3.       Select the Control you are about to replace.

4.       Screenshot every load listed under “Wired to.”

5.    Click on each “Wired to” to see exactly how the load is configured. Take a screenshot of this as well.

6.       Tap Sliders and screenshot each slider’s configuration.

7.       Repeat for every Control and Smart Dimmer Switch in your home.

IMPORTANT:  Do not skip this step. Once a faceplate is removed, the previous configuration may no longer be accessible in the app.

Step 2 — Identify your scenario

Answer the question below to find your path:

Question 1: Do you have more than one Brilliant Control in your home?

•         If you have only one Control → follow Path A below.

•         If you have two or more Controls → follow Path B

Path A — One Control in Your Home

  1. Remove your old faceplate from the wall.
  2. Attach the new faceplate in its place.
  3. Connect the new faceplate to your Wi-Fi
  4. Open the Brilliant app and reconfigure the device using your screenshots as a reference — re-enter all loads and settings.
  5. Check whether any Smart Dimmer Switches are installed on the line side of this circuit (see the Smart Dimmer Switch section below).
  6. Once the new faceplate is configured, go ahead and delete your old faceplate from the mobile app (Settings → Brilliant Home and Devices → Tap on old Faceplate → Remove Device

TIP:  If everything looks right in the app and your lights respond correctly, your install is complete. No integrations should be affected.

Path B — Multiple Controls, Confident Configuring

Use this path if you have two or more Brilliant Controls and are comfortable setting them up yourself.

Work through each faceplate one at a time. Fully replace and configure each device before moving to the next.

  1. Remove the first old faceplate and attach the new one.
  2. Connect the new faceplate to your Wi-Fi.
  3. Open the Brilliant app and fully configure this Control — loads, scenes, and any custom settings.
    1. Use the screenshots previously taken to help with how your devices were configured.
  4. Move to the next faceplate and repeat Steps 1–2 until all faceplates are replaced.
  5. Check whether any Smart Dimmer Switches need slider reconfiguration (see below).
  6. Once the new faceplate is configured, go ahead and delete your old faceplate from the mobile app (Settings → Brilliant Home and Devices → Tap on old Faceplate → Remove Device

NOTE:  When finished, your install is complete. Integrations are not affected on this path.

Smart Dimmer Switches — Slider Reconfiguration

If any of your Brilliant Smart Dimmer Switches are installed on the line side of a circuit that was connected to a replaced faceplate, you will need to manually reconfigure their slider settings after the swap.

How to tell if a Smart Dimmer Switch is affected

•         The Smart Dimmer Switch was on the incoming power side of a circuit (line side). This will show up as a power outlet under “Wired To”:

•         That circuit’s load (e.g., a light) was previously listed under “Wired to” on the faceplate you replaced.

TIP:  Not sure? Check Settings → Brilliant Home and Devices in the app to review wiring, or contact Brilliant Support.

How to reconfigure slider settings

24.   Open the Brilliant app and go to Settings.

25.   Tap Brilliant Home and Devices.

26.   Select the affected Smart Dimmer Switch.

27.   Tap Sliders.

28.   Restore each slider value using the screenshots you took before the install.

29.   Save your changes and test the connected light.

IMPORTANT:  Incorrect slider settings can cause flickering, failure to reach full brightness, or lights turning off at low levels. Always verify slider values after replacing a faceplate on the same circuit.
